'THE ORIGIN OF PRANAV ;ACCORDING TO , SHIVA PURANA ;-
06 FACTS ;-
1-Bhagavan Shiva advised Brahma, Vishnu and Rudra would all be of the same status. They are essentially of the manifestations of His origin. They would carry out ‘Panchakritya’ or Five Duties viz. ‘Srishti’ (Creation), ‘Sthithi’ (Preservation) and ‘Laya’ (Destruction), ‘Tirobhav’ (Concealment and Revival) and ‘Anugraha’ (Providing Salvation).
2-Srishti would be performed by Brahma, Sthithi by Vishnu, and Laya by Rudra; They would perform these tasks with the combined powers of their shaktis, Saraswati, Lakshmi and Uma.
3-This leaves two remaining functions. So the fourth task, Tirobhav would be performed by Mahesha, who would be yet be Lord Shiva’s fourth manifestation and finally the most significant task of Anugraha would be the exclusive dispensation by Lord Shiva Himself.
4-After defining the first four duties as ‘Sarga’ (Nature), Bhagavan Shiva taught the Mantra OM as the combined power of Himself and Shakti and the extraordinary potency of the recitation of the Mantra.
5-It was to the Trinity that the mighty power of the Omkara and Mantra OM were revealed and taught first. Om sums up all the Shaiva Siddhanta, the Vedas and scriptures. The Omkara is the combined power of Himself as ParaShiva and ParaShakti that is all pervasive and omnipotent.
6-ACCORDING TO SHIVA PURANA, Parashakti’s Bindu connects the three words A-U-M. ''The Omkara and Panchaksari emerge from Me and whoever recites this Mantra is always My own track'', said the Lord:
DESCRIPTION OF PRANAV;--
02 POINTS;-
1-Since ages human creed has always tried to explore the cause of the life and how to make it happy. The ancient philosophy of Yoga, developed by various sages and yogis, has successfully established some key aspects related to the whole shebang. 2-Quite a lot theories put forth and experimental results obtained by the modern scientific community are in well agreement with the above mentioned aspects. What follows is an attempt to explore such correlations.
24 FACTS ;- 1-Ishavasya Upanishad starts with the mystic syllables of peace :-- ॐ पूर्णमदः पूर्णमिदं पूर्णात्पुर्णमुदच्यते पूर्णस्य पूर्णमादाय पूर्णमेवावशिष्यते ॥ ॐ शान्तिः शान्तिः शान्तिः ॥ OM POORNAMADAH POORNAMIDAM POORNAAT POORNAMUDACHYATE; POORNASYA POORNAMAADAAYA POORNAMEVA AVASHISHYATE. Om Shaantih Shaantih Shaantih MEANING :-
This is full. From full, the full is taken, the full has come. If full is removed from full, the full alone remains. 1-1-This explains one of the key principles of physics, Conservation of Energy. The word POORNA is nothing but the ultimate principle or the energy source of creation. 2-Mahatma Gandhiji said that even if all the Upanishads and other scriptures happened all of a sudden to be reduced to ashes and if only this shloka were left in the memory of Hindus, Hinduism would live forever. 3-God pervades all all this that we see in the Universe. Therefore we must give up the idea of 'I' and 'Mine', accept gratefully whatever is given to us by God and use it sharing it with our fellow beings. Eschew all feelings of greed and selfishness. Remember that everything really belongs to God alone. 4-These two Upanishad shlokas teach us that we should cultivate a sense of constant awareness of the Omnipresence of the Lord and his presence in all beings. We should have love for all beings and have a spirit of surrender to God who is the all-pervading truth and the reality immanent in all beings and things. 5-OMKAARA;-- "Listen to the primeval Pranava, OM, resounding in your heart as well as in the heart of the Universe". OM is the sacred symbol for the Hindus. For them it is synonymous or equivalent to God. It is also called the Mahaamantra, the best aid and means for man to realize God. In the Shri Satya Sai Sarva Dharma symbol OM represents Hinduism. 6-In the timeless beginning it is said Brahman alone was. It was a nature of supreme silence. Out of this emerged the Naada Brahman or the sound aspect and expression of God. This was the primeval sound OMKAARA.
7-Out of this primeval sound emerged the creation composed of the five elements: space, air, and water, fire and earth. OMKAARA is the life principle of creation. That is why it is also called Pranava meaning that which runs through Praana or pervades all life.
8-There is a lot of literary work available on the significance of this word. No where in the world can we find another sacred symbol that has got such a vast significance. 9-The entire history of this syllable is given in the Vedas and Upanishads. There is a Vedic Verse as follows: PRAJAAPATIR VAI IDAM AGRA AASEET TASYA VAAK DVITEEYAA AASEET VAG VAI PARAMAM BRAHMA "In the beginning was prajapati, The Brahman with whom was the word, the word itself was the supreme Brahman". 10-The same idea is expressed in the Gospel of St. John in the New Testament: "In the beginning was the word and the word was with God and the word was God". OM is itself God and it is also a means for realizing God. Other faiths too have a holy word like this OM but is in a little different form. To the Christians it is Amen. Muslims call it Amin; although their interpretation and usage is not quite identical with that of OM. 11-Om symbolizes the names and forms of personal God. Since it is difficult to concentrate on a formless (Niraakaara) Brahman we have various forms of Goddess and God suited to our liking so we have the tradition of Ishta devataas. OM however encompasses all the names and forms of God. 12-Every name has a key letter-Beeja Akshara. Based on this A is believed to represent Brahmaa, U - Vishnu & M - Maheshwara as OM encompasses the triple aspect of God.
13-Since Saraswatee resides on the tongue of Brahmaa and Lakshmi on the Vakshasthala of Vishnu OM includes the names of these two Goddesses as well. Paaravati being the shakti aspect of Shiva and a part and parcel of the half form of Shiva, who is Ardhanaareeshwara, the half male and female form, the M symbol of OM indicating 'Maheshwara' thus includes Paarvati also. In other words all forms of God respond when OM is chanted.
14-That is why it is said that OM is the direct telephone number of Baba. If we say OM, we are instantly connected to Baba, whether He is in Brindavan, Anantapur or anywhere on tour. Baba says Omkaara and Raama's name are identical. Raama is symbolized by the pranava and the supporting sounds A, U and M represent Lakshmana, Bharata and Shatrugna respectively. 15-OM is the material and basis of the world of sounds and is the basis for the science and phenomenon of phonetics. All sounds and words have their origin in pranava shabda. All sounds that can be produced or uttered by combination of different letters or any alphabet come under the three main sounds produced by A, U and M.
16-Since it (pranava shabda) contains all the breath sounds. It is said the OM is the sum and substance of the Vedas. Pranava contains all the names; is the basis of all different forms of worship and all names by which God is adored. 17-OM represents all the states of consciousness, the physical as well as the spiritual and our awareness from the physical to the transcendental (divine) state. The Upanishads say that OM represents self (the non-dual reality, Brahman or Atmaa).
18-This self has four states of Consciousness - 18-1-Waking - Jagrat 18-2-Dreaming - Swapna 18-3-Deep Sleep - sushupti NOTE;-
Most of us experience these 3 states. FOURTH ONE ..Tureeyaavasthaa is the higher plane of consciousness (only Yogis experience this) This is also the Samaadhi Avasthaa. Thus we see that OM signifies all these four states of consciousness. 19-The four states are denoted by..
19-1-A represents waking state 19-2-U represents Dream State 19-3-M represents deep Sleep State NOTE;-
When OM is pronounced there is a tailing silence (Ashabda). This rich humming sound of silence is Amaatra OM, self or Atmaa. This is the basis and substratum of our very being (state of divine consciousness). 20-Om must be chanted as slowly as possible. A emerging from the throat (originating in the region of the navel and U rolling over the tongue in the ascending tone until the sound reaches the peak and ending in M at the lips. Then, it must take a curve at M and descend as slowly as it rose, taking as much time as it took to ascend, and with Amaatra OM it must gradually merge into the silence reverberating in the cavity of the heart. 21-One who has a subtle ear can hear OM, proclaiming the Lord's presence in every sound. All five elements vibrate with this sound. Like the temple bell ringing AUM, the OM sound constantly goes on silently in our body.
22-This silent sounds in our sushumnaa naadi, which our gross hearing facility cannot hear; is AUM only. It goes on humming "SOHAM". SO means HE and HAM meaning I (Aham) (individual self). Thus it is a medium connecting Man to God. 23-The names of God although they are great in themselves need to be preceded by OM. Before any ritual or worship, a Ganesha pooja is done. Likewise OM has to precede all sacred chartings, even chanting of the Name of Ganesha who is Himself Pranavaakaara. 24-We say "OM GANESHAAYA NAMAH" etc. It is therefore understood that when OM is added as prefix to any name or mantra the power of the Mantra or name increases several folds. WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT MODES OF OMKAARA CHANTING?--
The four modes are... 1-Vaikharee - first stage of sound process (incantation) when it is repeated in a loud voice (to concentrate the mind). 2-The second stage is Madhyamaa where the sound process (incantation) is not heard but only the lips move. It is a stage between sound and soundlessness. 3-The third stage is Pashyantee where it is soundless. There is no open or covered recitation but Japa still goes on in mind without an effort. 4-The Fourth paraa stage of Japa the Mantra itself is forgotten and only its impact remains. This is the Tureeya State of complete bliss, happiness and joy.
HOW TO PRACTICE OMKAARA CHANTING?--
04 FACTS;- 1-We have to practice OMKAARA chanting with a conscious effort. We can also add the name of our Ishta-Devataa to it. This process of chanting should become a part and parcel of ourselves like our breathing. 2-OMKAARA bestows liberation and immortality and unites us with the God forever. In the 8th chapter of the Bhagwad Geeta the "Aksharaparabrahmayoga" Lord Krishna says, "uttering the one syllable OM, Brahman and remembering me, he who departs leaving the body attains the supreme goal". 3-OM chanting should be our constant hobby. Unless our breathing is deep, rhythmic and regulated our physical health suffers and mental calm and peace is disturbed. OM chanting helps us to regulate our breathing. It also bestows on us mental calm and peace. Our power of concentration and memory power increases. 4-Let OM chanting be our constant companion from today. Let our mind cling to it. With every single chanting of OM, we are marching one step nearer to Baba. Sooner or later, we are sure to reach his lotus feet and become nearest and dearest to him.
THE INTEGRATION OF THREE LEVELS OF AUM;--
09 FACTS;-
1- Gradually, one comes to see that the last three methods of using AUM (above) are manifestations of the same levels of being. Notice how the "A" represents, Waking, Conscious, and Gross levels. The "U" represents Dreaming, Unconscious, and Subtle levels. The "M" represents Deep Sleep, Subconscious and Causal. The Silence represents the fourth state, which is above or higher than the other three.
2-The OM mantra designates the whole of the universe, including the gross, subtle, and causal planes (realms, or levels) and the absolute reality of which they are a part. 3-The explanation below can sound a bit technical, but this truly is a very practical use of the mantra, once you understand the meaning. It does require working with the mantra and the meaning, but then it becomes clearer and quite insightful.
4-The OM Mantra has four parts. First, is the sound like "Ah," then "Uuuu," then "Mmmm," and finally the silence beyond the mantra. Thus, the mantra is also written as AUM, as well as OM.
5-The three sounds, and the silence have the following meanings:The A sound refers to; the gross world/waking state of consciousness/the conscious level of mental functioning.
6-The U part refers to; the subtle realm/dreaming state of consciousness/the unconscious level of mind.
7-The M refers to; the causal plane, out of which the gross and subtle emerge/the deep sleep state of consciousness/the subconscious level, the storage place of mind.
8-The Silence after these three; refers to the absolute reality that is the substratum for each of the other three realities/ refers to the witness consciousness that is observer of the other three states of consciousness/refers to the pure consciousness, which permeates the conscious, unconscious, and subconscious levels of awareness.
9-Start slowly in remembering the parts:---
When using the mantra in this way, it is easiest to begin by remembering the mantra very slowly, allowing time to be aware of each of the levels. Be aware of the four parts of the mantra separately (though forming a continuous sound), something like this...AaaaaaUuuuuuMmmmmm.....Silence.....
WHAT IS THE METHOD TO EXPERIENCE THE GREAT VIBRATION OF AUM MANTRA ?-
06 FACTS;-
1-When the "A" of OM mantra arises in the mind field, be aware of the gross world, including the objects of the world, the people, and your own physical being. Actually allow your attention to scan these aspects of the world. Do not get caught up in these objects; just be aware of this level of reality, and then let go of it, so as to go beyond.
1-2-When the "A" of OM mantra arises in the mind field, be aware of the waking state of consciousness. This does not mean thinking of the objects of the world, but rather, being mindful of your personal waking state, in relation to the world and your inner mental and emotional process. This simply means being aware of being awake.
1-3-When the "A" of OM mantra arises in the mind field, be aware of the conscious level of mind. The easiest way to do this, is to contrast conscious to the unconscious. There is the conscious, that we are aware of here, in this external world, and there is the unconscious that is not seen in the deeper mind.
2-When the "U" of OM mantra arises in the mind field, be aware, as best you can of the existence of the subtle or astral realm, including whatever objects you might intuit(sense). As with the gross world, do not get caught up in these objects; just be aware of this level of reality, and then let go of it, so as to go beyond.
2-1-When the "U" of OM mantra arises in the mind field, be aware of thedreaming state of consciousness. This does not necessarily mean that you are experiencing those dreams, but that you are mindful of the dream state that is beneath the waking state
2-3-When the "U" of OM mantra arises in the mind field, be aware, as best you can, that your mind is presently functioning at an unconscious level as well. There is a tremendous amount of thinking process normally going on, that is out of view. This is what psychologists call primary process. It is going on behind the scenes, much like the microprocessor in a computer that is invisibly doing its work.
3-When the "M" of OM mantra arises in the mind field, be aware of thecausal, the background stillness out of which the subtle and gross emerge, and into which they rest when not active. This can be difficult to imagine. It might help to think of it like being the canvas on which a picture is painted, or the screen on which a movie is projected.
3-1-When the "M" of OM mantra arises in the mind field, be aware of thecausal, the background stillness out of which the subtle and gross emerge, and into which they rest when not active. This can be difficult to imagine. It might help to think of it like being the canvas on which a picture is painted, or the screen on which a movie is projected.
3-2-When the "M" of OM mantra arises in the mind field, be aware of the latent part of the mind, where all of the countless memories of people, objects, and day to day information is stored. It is there, like the information stored on a hard disk of a computer. Until it is needed, it just sits there in a latent, (hidden) dormant form .It is actually in a formless form, somewhat like the data on the hard disk that is stored only as raw data, with no images as such. Be aware of that stillness, that is the storage of your deep impressions and habit patterns.
4-When the Silence comes to the mind field, be aware of the absolute reality that permeates each of the other three layers. This fourth level of the mantra the absolute reality, is experienced in a shallow way at first, and only deepens with continued practice of contemplation and yoga meditation.
4-1- In other words, consciousness flows through the waking state, the dreaming state, and even the deep sleep state (although there is no active content in deep sleep). Imagine that you can somehow be witness to waking, dreaming, and deep sleep from a higher vantage point that is aware of all.
4-2-Consciousness flows through the unconscious functioning. Consciousness is there in the latent part of the mind, even though those objects are not awakened into action at the moment. Eventually, this Silence expands to being the awareness of the other three states. It is at this stage that one is called a Seer, in that all of the other levels of mind are witnessed from this vantage point.
5-The one great vibration...
One comes to experience that the four aspects of AUM, the vibration of the universe, the object that goes with OM mantra, the flow with the breath, and the countless pulsings of the gross and subtle, are all manifestations of that one great vibration that is represented by OM mantra.
6-Unity of the methods..
In practicing the methods above, it is best to focus on one at a time, so as to capture its individual meaning and experience. Eventually, the unity of the methods is experienced. ...SHIVOHAM...
