According to modern sciences, the Universe is made up of basic physical particles that include electrons, protons, neutrons, mesons, gluons and quarks. At a spiritual level, however, the Universe is made up of something even more basic. These basic particles are known as the three subtle basic components (trigunas) namely Sattva( protons), Raja(neutrons) and Tama(electrons)... THREE GUNA & THREE VRITTI;--

03 FACTS;- 1-The mind has three Gunas, viz., Sattva (light, bliss, goodness), Rajas (passion, motion) and Tamas (inertia, darkness). There are three Vrittis in the mind corresponding to the three Gunas. Santa Vritti (peace) comes out of Sattva Guna, Ghora Vritti from Rajo Guna and Mudha Vritti from Tamo Guna.

2-Equilibrium or balance is Santa Vritti; anger is Ghora Vritti; laziness (Alasya), carelessness (Pramada) and drowsiness (Tandri) are Mudha Vrittis. In the word triguna, “tri” stands for three and “gunās” stand for subtle-components. 3-The three subtle basic components of Sattva, Raja and Tama are the very fabric of creation. Unknown to modern sciences, they permeate through all living and non-living, tangible and intangible things. The vibrations emitted by anything are dependent on its predominant subtle basic component. This also influences the behaviour of all things. The proportion of these components in human beings can only be changed by spiritual practice. WHAT IS SATTVA GUNA (Characteristics)?--

04 FACTS;- 1-Sattva Guna is purity. It is Prakasa (illumination, light). Sattva Guna is a force favourable for the attainment of Moksha. Daivi Sampat-virtues such as fearlessness, purity of heart, etc.,-will confer liberation on you. The effect of Sattva Guna is Brahmavichara (enquiry or search for Truth; differentiation between Sat and Asat, what is real and what is unreal.) 2-A Sattvic mind is always steady. It finds delight internally. It may stick to one place indefinitely. It keeps friendship with persons for a long, long time. It can read the Gita or the Yogavasishtha any number of days. It can live on Dal-roti for years together without any grumbling. 3-During Sattvic moments, when there is preponderance of pure Sattva in the mind, you are in touch with the Divine Source owing to the cleanness of the mind-mirror. You will get inspiration. You will compose beautiful poetry, etc. Preserve those inspired writings. Jot them down in your notebook. 4-Sattvapatti is a state of mind wherein the mind is full of Sattva or purity. There is purity of thought (Bhava-Samsuddhi) and purity of heart (Sattva-Samsuddhi). It is the fourth Jnana-Bhumika or fourth stage of Jnana. WHAT IS RAJO GUNA (Characteristics)?--

07 FACTS;-- 1-Rajo Guna is a hostile force to pull you down into Samsara. Asuri Sampat-vices like Dambha, Darpa, Krodha, etc.-will drag you down into hell. A mind endowed with Sattva Guna will make a man still and inactive, while a mind with Rajo Guna will make him restless. It will not allow him to sit idle and will force him to work. 2-The Rajasic mind always wants new sensations and variety. It likes certain persons, objects and places now and, after some time, it becomes disgusted with them and wants new persons for company, new vegetables to eat, new books to read and new places to see (finds pleasure in sightseeing). 3-The mind of Rajasic type wants always company and talk. These are the two defects which distract the mind much. Avoid company. Live alone. Observe Mouna(SILEN CE). You will get peace of mind. Most of the pain comes from bad company. Be careful in the selection of your companions. You will rarely find a good, sincere friend. Never take a friend into your close confidence without testing him for a long time. There is no company or talk in Brahman who is Asanga and Asabda. 4-The Rajasic mind has a tendency to look into the defects of others. It also remembers the bad deeds or wrongs done by others and forgets easily their good acts. These two tendencies intensify hatred and cause frequent disturbance in the mind. 5-A mind which is devoid of Sattva Guna will not be good enough to consider others' happiness as its own and will, therefore, be ever reeling. Again, as this mind has not the complacency to rejoice at another's virtues, there is no internal contentment. Then, as it does not consider others' sufferings as its own, there arises in it no compassion for them. 6-It is the Rajasic mind that splits, separates, divides and deceptively shows plurality (Nanatva). The sun is one. The moon is one. Akasa is one. The idea behind languages is one. The feeling of sincerity is one. There is no inside or outside. Husband and wife become one in heart. Intimate friends are one in heart. Matter is one. Energy is one. Sattvic mind is one. It unifies. Cosmic Mahat is one. Karma (law of cause and effect) is one. Dharma is one. Religion is one. Truth is one. Brahman is one. Ekameva Advitiyam Brahma (Brahman is one without a second). 7-Intense Rajas takes Sattvic turn. Dacoit Ratnakar became the sage Valmiki. Jagai and Madhai, who were intensely Rajasic and who pelted stones at Lord Gouranga, became his first disciples. What is Tamogun? It is the tendency in an individual to avoid work, not to work hard,to be contented in whatever is available. He is lazy in both physical actions as well as in analysing problems logically. He is not interested in hard work, even if he gets physical rewards. Most of us in India are traditionaly contented and lazy.

WHAT IS THE IMPORTANCE OF SATTVA GUNA ?--

06 FACTS;- 1-The real peace of mind does not come from outside. It is produced in the same mind when the mind is controlled and its thoughts are checked. You must put forth great efforts to check the passions and desires. Then alone will your aptitude for activity be subdued and you will be at rest and your thoughts will be stilled. Develop, therefore, Sattva Guna by Japa, Vichara, Satsanga, meditation, light Sattvic food, Tapas and Svadhyaya. 2-An ordinary worldly-minded man can hardly hear the inner voice of Atman. He cannot get pure thoughts or Vichara (enquiry into Self) also. Every Sattvic (pure) thought emanates from Sattvic Buddhi (pure intellect). 3-In the case of worldlings, all thoughts proceed from the mind only. He who does Nishkama Karma Yoga (selfless service) and has purity of the mind, begins to entertain thoughts of God and meditation. 4-Generally, the mind raises various sorts of curious, fantastic thoughts. It deludes all. It may pretend to do Vichara also. But, when it comes to actual practice, it will do nothing. If there is a serious determination in you to concentrate and, if you put it into actual practice for months steadily and, if the longing for Darshana of God or Self-realisation becomes keen and acute, then alone think that all these kinds of thoughts proceed from your Sattvic Buddhi only. 5-All Sadhanas aim at the development of Sattva Guna and the attainment of pure, irresistible Will. This will bring about Avidya Nivritti (removal of ignorance) and Paramananda-Prapti (Sat-Chit-Ananda state). Increase of Sattva Guna and pure, strong, determined Will pave a long way in achieving God-realisation. 6-In the world also, there are persons with a few Sattvic virtues such as patience, generosity, forgiveness, etc. But, a spiritual aspirant tries to develop the mind as a whole, to acquire all Sattvic virtues WHAT ARE THE CHARACTERISTICS OF PURE MIND?--

02 FACTS;- 1-A spiritual aspirant tries to develop the mind as a whole in order to acquire all the sattwic virtues. A pure mind likes solitude, silence, simple living, high thinking, philosophical discussions, studying spiritual books, meditation and satsang. 2-A stainless mind can be judged by one’s speech, face and eyes. Through one’s expression an opinion may be formed as to whether a person has a stainless mind or not. Higher desires, noble aspirations, lofty ideals, true spiritual feelings, mercy, sympathy, pure unselfish love, devotion, self-inquiry, inspiration, genius – all these come from the higher, pure mind. The pure mind is Brahman itself, which is an embodiment of absolute purity.

A BIRD'S EYE VIEW OF THE CHARACTERISTICS OF TRIGUN;-- The characteristics of each of these components are described in brief in the following table:--- 07 FACTS;-- 1-The 3 components Characteristics Adjective Example a-Sattva Purity and knowledge Sāttvik Sāttvik man – lives in service of society with no expectation of recognition or reward or any ulterior motive b-Raja Action and passion Rājasik Rājasik man – lives more for personal gain and achievement c-Tama Ignorance and inertia Tāmasik Tāmasik man – has no problem about stepping on other’s toes to get ahead or harming society 2-We call the components subtle because they are intangible, not physical in nature and they cannot be seen with any instruments such as the latest electronic microscopes. Technically advanced physical instrumentation in the future too will not be able to measure them. 3-These three subtle basic components can only be perceived by the subtle sense organs or our sixth sense (ESP---Extrasensory perception, also called sixth sense or second sight, includes reception of information not gained through the recognized physical senses but sensed with the mind. ) 4-The subtle basic Sattva component is the most subtle or intangible of the three subtle basic components. It is the component nearest to divinity. Hence its predominance in a person is characterised by happiness, contentment, virtues like patience, perseverance, ability to forgive, spiritual yearning etc. 5-The subtle basic Tama component is the basest of the three. Its predominance in a person is reflected by laziness, greed, attachment to worldly matters etc. 6-The subtle basic Raja component provides fuel to the other two, i.e. brings about the action. So depending on whether a person is predominantly sāttvik or tāmasik the subtle basic Raja component will bring about actions pertaining to Sattva or Tama. 7-Due to the intangible nature of the subtle basic Sattva, Raja and Tama components, schools and universities that teach modern sciences are unaware that they exist. Hence they do not include them in their curriculum. As a result, the concept of the three subtle basic components may seem alien to some of us. However this does not discount the fact that they pervade our entire existence and the world we live in. Depending on which one of the three subtle-components is predominant within us, it influences how we:----- a-React to situations b-Make decisions c-Make choices d-Live our lives Since they are not physical in nature, it is difficult to put a finger on them and give them a physical characteristic. THE COLOUR ,THE AMPLITUDE ETC. OF TRIGUN ( obtained through the sixth sense (ESP); --

04 FACTS;- The following diagram shows what the three subtle basic components look like when they are active. The three subtle basic components are basically intangible particles. When they are active, i.e. when there is energy accompanying them, they appear in a wave form. 1-COLOUR;---The subtle basic Sattva component appears yellow, the subtle basic Raja component red and the subtle basic Tama component black in colour when perceived through highly active sixth sense. 2-WAVELENGTH;--The subtle basic Raja component being the most active is reflected in its wavelength, whereas the subtle basic Sattva component being more tranquil has a longer wavelength. The disorganised and distorted nature of the subtle basic Tama component is reflected in its irregular wavelength. 3-AMPLITUDE;---The amplitude of the Raja component is the highest as it is the most active. The amplitude of the subtle basic Sattva component is lower and regular, whereas that of the subtle basic Tama component is low and irregular. Length: Their length is dictated according to the need of the function. 4. The three subtle basic components and the five Cosmic Principles RELATION BETWEEN TRIGUN & PANCHMAHABHUT;---

03 FACTS;- 1-The Cosmic Principles are intangible in nature and are the subtle most aspect of the actual elements that we can see and feel. For example, the Absolute Water Principle is the subtlest form of the water that goes to make up the rivers and the oceans etc.

2-In short, the five Absolute Cosmic Principles are the building blocks of the Universe. But they are also made up of the three subtle basic components. 3-The following table shows how each Cosmic Principle differs in its composition with regard to the proportion of the three subtle basic components;--

PANCHMAHABHUT-------------Sattva ------Raja------- Тama Earth ---------------------------------10% --------40%----------50% Water--------------------------------- 20% ----------40% ----------40% Fire------------------------------------ 30% ------------40%---------- 30% Air--------------------------------------- 40% -----------40%------------ 20% Ether------------------------------------- 50% -----------40%-------------- 10%

ESSENCE OF TABLE;-

05 FACTS;- 1-As you can see from the table above, the Absolute Earth Principle has the highest amount of Tama; hence it is also the heaviest. The subtle basic Tama component limits existence, whereas the subtle basic Sattva component makes it expansive. 2-This explains why the Absolute Earth Principle is the most inferior among the five Cosmic Principles. It also explains why the Absolute Ether Principle is the most subtle and sattvik and thus the most powerful .3-The reduction in the Tama subtle basic component across the five Absolute Cosmic Principles makes the elements progressively less tangible. For example, Fire is less gross or tangible than Earth. 4-Humans are composed predominantly of the Absolute Earth and Absolute Water Principles. As an individual starts evolving spiritually, he or she starts functioning at progressively higher levels, like the Absolute Fire Principle etc.

5-This is characterised by a sense of radiance emanating from a spiritually evolved person. As this happens, the individual’s basic needs begin to decrease, such as the need for food and sleep. In addition, his comprehension and capacity to perform various activities increases markedly both quantitatively and qualitatively. WHAT IS THE RELATION BETWEEN TRIGUN & WORLD?-

05 FACTS;- 1-NATURAL DISASTERS;-- If there is an increase in the Raja and Tama in the world, it translates into increased wars, terrorist activities and natural disasters. The increase in Raja and Tama in the world causes a destabilisation of the five Cosmic Principles resulting in catastrophic natural disasters. Please refer to this post on the reason behind the increasing intensity of natural disasters. 2-NON-LIVING THINGS;- The following chart shows the relationship between non-living things and the three subtle-components. The proportion of subtle basic components in various non-living objects Sattva------------- Raja------------------- Тama 1-Temples of God, holy places, places of pilgrimage 5%------------------ 1% ----------------------94 % (its vary at Siddhpiths,,,,,,Jyortirling & Vrindavan) 2-Regular/average places 2%---------------- 2%-------------------------- 96% 3-Evil places 1%--------------- 1%--------------------------- 98%

3-LIVING ENTITIES;-- The following chart shows the relationship between living entities and the three subtle-components. As you can see, life has a greater value in terms of the Sattva subtle basic component across the board as compared to even religious places as shown in the table above. The proportion of subtle basic components in various living objects;---- Living entities------Sattva---------------- Raja--------------- Тama Saint-------------------- 50%---------------- 30%----------------- 20% Average man----------- 20%--------------- 30%------------------ 50% Evil person---------------- 10%-------------- 50%------------------ 40% Intellectually disabled person--- 10%------- 30%---------------- 60% Animals and birds -------------10–20% -------25–40%------------ 40–65% Vegetation /Naturalness--------5–10% ---------10–15% ------------65–85% 4- This is also one of the main reasons why the spiritual level of a person in particular premises has more impact on the overall vibrations emanating from that place as opposed to the premises itself. For example, if a person of the level of a Saint enters premises; that have negative vibrations due to defects in construction ;it will have negligible effect on the Saint.

5-Thus the sciences of Feng-shui and the science of studying premises (vastushastra) are of more relevance to persons at lower spiritual levels or those who do not perform any spiritual practice. RELATION BETWEEN TRIGUN & HUMAN BEINGS;---

07 FACTS;- In the following sub-sections, we expand on how the three subtle basic components impact different aspects of our lives. Sattva, Raja, Tama -In relation to --- What are we comprised of.... Percentage of three subtle basic components------ 1-The Physical body 20%---SATTAV 40%---RAJAS 40%---TAMAS 2-The Mental body or the Mind 30%---S 40% ---R 30%--T 3-The Causal body or the Intellect 40%--S 40%---R 20%----T 4-The Super--causal body or The Subtle Ego 50%----S 40%----R 10%----T 5-As the subtle basic Rajas component is related to the functioning of the body, its proportion is the same in all the bodies. However as you can see from the table above, there is considerable difference between the Sattva and Tama components across the various bodies. 6-This has a direct impact on the ability of the body to provide us sustainable and long lasting happiness. For example, the Sattva component in the intellect body is high compared to the physical body.

7-Therefore the quality of the happiness (ANANDA) we experience when we are intellectually stimulated and satisfied..That is of a higher quality and more lasting than happiness experienced due to the physical body. RELATION BETWEEN TRIGUN & SPIRITUAL LEVEL;---

04 FACTS;- 1-Spiritual level and the proportion of the three subtle basic components are very closely interlinked. However their relationship is pretty much a chicken and egg thing. We can say that a person’s spiritual level is defined by the predominance of the Sattva, Raja and Tama components. 2-Alternatively we can also say that the predominance of any one of the Sattva, Raja and Tama components defines a person’s spiritual level. As we do spiritual practice we begin to change the proportion of the three subtle basic components within us towards there being more proportion of the Sattva component. In other words, we change the Tama component into Sattva. 3-As we generate more of the Sattva component within us (in proportion to the other two subtle-components), it positively affects our spiritual level and also our personalities. 4-The following is a graph that shows the different proportions of the three subtle basic components within us as we increase our spiritual level through spiritual practice;-- A-After the 50% spiritual level, the proportion of the three components remains static. The reason for this is that one cannot have any less than 20% Tama. If this did happen the person would begin to dematerialise. Consequently, as long as one has a physical body the Tama component cannot be less than 20%. B-However the effect of the components on the person is diluted with a further rise in spiritual level, so much so that at the spiritual level of 80%, the effect of them is negligible on the person. C-As long as an evolved Saint of 100% spiritual level is within a physical body, He will be made up of the three subtle basic components. As soon as He dies and leaves His body all of the three subtle basic components become zero and the Saint merges completely with God......CONTD.
