WHY ARE THERE 360 DEGREES IN A CIRCLE?- 06 FACTS;- 1-There is a deep riddle hidden in the way that time and space is measured that needs to be explored more closely. Why does a day have 24 hours? Why does an hour have 60 minutes? Why are there 360 degrees in a circle? 2-The Zodiac is a circle around the earth, used in astronomy to pinpoint positions of planets and other objects in our surrounding cosmos. Since ancient times, this circle has been divided into twelve parts, each 30° wide of the circle’s total 360°. Those are the Zodiac signs. They correspond to constellations of stars in the sky, but the latter are not equally wide. Astrology as well as astronomy use the 30° Zodiac division. 3-The Sumerians watched the Sun, Moon, and the five visible planets (Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn), primarily for omens. They did not try to understand the motions physically. They did, however, notice the circular track of the Sun's annual path across the sky and knew that it took about 360 days to complete one year's circuit. Consequently, they divided the circular path into 360 degrees to track each day's passage of the Sun's whole journey. This probably happened about 2400 BC. 4-That's how we got a 360 degree circle. Around 1500 BC, Egyptians divided the day into 24 hours, though the hours varied with the seasons originally. Greek astronomers made the hours equal. About 300 to 100 BC, the Babylonians subdivided the hour into base-60 fractions: 60 minutes in an hour and 60 seconds in a minute. The base 60 of their number system lives on in our time and angle divisions. 5-The Babylonians used a base 60 number system (not base 6). It seems clear that degrees were devised by ancient astronomers who noticed that the sun moved one degree each day (about our fixed Earth) past the stars that appeared to be fixed to an external heavenly sphere. It took one month for the sun to move the 30 degrees from one sign of the Zodiac to the next. 6-Since there are really 365 days in a year (not 360) why isn't a degree defined to be 1/365 of a circle instead of the official 1/360? The current favorite explanation is that the number 360 is a compromise between the solar year of about 365.25 days and the lunar year (consisting of 12 months of 29.5 days each) of about 354.37 days. Of course the months fit well with the Zodiac, which played an important role in their astronomy. ( an ancient calendar showing a year of 360 days has been discovered, so maybe the year at that time was 5 days shorter than our year!) WHY OUR CLOCKS HAVE 24 HOURS IN A DAY ?- 04 FACTS;- 1-There are 12 houses, and 12 signs – and similarly our clocks have 12 hours on them, even though there are really 24 hours in a day. It takes 2 hours for each of the 12 zodiac signs to move across the Eastern Horizon, to “rise.” Therefore we can think we should have 12 time units in our day, not 24, each of which is twice as long as our current hour. But the only reason we would think like this is because we have forgotten about the way ancient astrology divides the signs into smaller units. 2-The first smaller unit within a zodiac sign is, in fact, called hora. And this is where the word hour comes from...This hora division splits each zodiac into halves, giving one half to the Sun (Yang) and the other half to the Moon (Yin). 24 horas rise in the east every day.
