THE MEANING OF SIXTEEN KALAS;- 09 FACTS;- 1-One model of the stages of life development or evolution is the 16 Kala model. Kala is a curious word. In Sanskrit, its usually used to mean time. However it more broadly means attribute. The phases of the moon are also related to the 16 kalas with the full moon being 16. 2- And more specifically in this context, siddhi or ability.he 16 Kalas are the eleven senses (mind plus the ten sense organs)and the five gross elements - all born of the five supreme elements. These supreme elements are born of Ahankara/EGO an that in turn is born of Mahat. 3-Kalas here before as they’re used to “grade” avatars by the abilities they displayed. There is a list of about 64 abilities, grouped to the different levels of this scale. Krishna was said to be a 16/16 on the Kala scale of ability, a Purnavatar. Rama is suggested to be a 12 or so, and Buddha a 10. 4-The 16 Kalas: 1) Annamaya – Seed-born (food) 2) Pranamaya – Water-born (breath) 3) Manomaya – Egg-born (mind) 4) Vigyanamaya – Womb-born (intellect) 5) Anandamaya – Reborn (joy) Note how these first 5 are the first the koshas or sheaths and how childhood development progresses through these stages (physical, emotional, mental, intellect) 6) Atishayini (Peace) 7) Viparinabhini (Love) 8) Sankramini (Creator) 9) Prabhavi (potent, mighty) 10) Kunthini (beyond pain or eternal?) Note that the above stages are of development in Consciousness. 11) Vikasini (great) 12) Maryadini (highly respected, attained) 13) Sanhaladini (a source of happiness) 14) Ahladini (causing joy or delight) 15) Paripurna (perfect or full) 16) Swarupavasthitha (established in God self/form) 5-Humans are obviously 4 – womb-worn (mammals) but have the opportunity to gain “abilities” and rise to as high as an 8 or 9. The sequence is interesting as Joy, Peace, Love, and Creator suggest the stages of development described, with Peace as Self Realization, followed by God Consciousness and God Realization. Unity and Brahman are not as clear. After that, we move past what a human form is capable of.For perspective, note that a very enlightened person is about half way up the scale. 5-It’s also interesting to note there is a second 16 kala model based on ones ability to command:-- A-5 Elements (Earth, Water, Fire, Air, Space) – this correlates to the first 5 kalas in the model above. However, the typical human does not command any elementary forces so this is not an equivalent model. B-5 Senses (Smell, Taste, Sight, Touch, Hearing) C-Time (inclusive) D- Prana (life force) E-Mind, Intellect, Ego, and Consciousness (Chetana) 6-Some texts suggest someone capable of deep samadhi is in command of their senses. But these are much more advanced than that. As in command of the cosmic senses. Also worth noting – women are said to be 1/2 kala higher than men. This Matti kala gives the ability to bear a child. 7-Seen another way, they list the 16 kalas as the 16 gifts of Krishna. Here is one translation: 1. Daya – Compassion 2. Dharjya – Patience 3. Kshama – Forgiveness 4. Nyaya – Justice 5. Nirapeksha – Impartiality 6. Niraskata – Detachment 7. Tapasya – Meditation and Spiritual Powers 8. Aparchitta – Invincibility 9. Danasheel – Beneficience, Bestower of all wealth in the world and nature. 10. Saundarjyamaya – Beauty Incarnate 11. Nrityajna – Best of Dancers 12. Sangitajna – Best of Singers 13. Neetibadi – Embodiment of Honesty 14. Satyabadi – Truth Itself 15. Sarvagnata – Perfect master of all arts, such as poetry, drama, painting etc. 16. Sarvaniyanta – Controller of All 16 Kalas 8-Regarding 16 Kalas of the Moon :- According to the Indian sashtras like Lalitopakhyanam, Tantrarajatantra, Dakshinamurti Samhita, Vasistha Samhita, Kamakala Vilasam and Bhairava Yamalam; the following is the spiritual and cosmic significance of the phases of the moon. 8-1-The Moon has 16 kalas, or phases. Out of these 15 are visible to us and the 16th is beyond our visibility. The 16 kalas are:- 1.Amrita, 2.Manada, 3.Poosha, 4.Tusthi, 5.Pusthi, 6.Rati, 7.Dhruti, 8.Sasichini, 9.Chandrika, 10.Kanta, 11.Jyostna, 12.Shree, 13.Preeti, 14.Angada, 15.Poorna 16.Poornamruta 9-There are 12 kala (tacts) of Sun and 16 kala ( tacts) of moon.Below are the names of these tacts of sun as;- Name of 12 sun's tacts (kala):- 1- TAPINI 2- TAAPINI 3 -DHRUMA 4- MARICHI 5-JWALINI 6- RUCHI 7- SUKSHAMANA 8- BHOGDA 9- VISHWA 10-BODHINI 11- DHARINI 12- KSHMA THE SIGNIFICANCE OF SIXTEEN KALAS OF MOON;- 09 FACTS;- 1-The abstract concept of 16 Kalas was used in context of the level of Prana and the phases of the moon. This can give some insights: The word Kala usually refers to the extent by which the moon waxes (or wanes) in one day. So by this understanding, the Moon possesses 16 different Kalas (different phases of the Moon). 2-You can observe this from one Amavasya (No-moon day) to the next Purnima (Full moon day). So if you count the number of days from one Amavasya to the next Purnima, it turns out to be 16. And the transition from No-Moon to the Full Moon also symbolizes moving from Zero (nothingness) to Fullness. 3-On the no-moon day you don’t see the moon at all, and on the full moon day you see the complete moon. This does not mean that the Moon is not there on the day of Amavasya. No, it is still there. So by this understanding, these are called the Solah Kalas. On the day of solar eclipse, for example, the Moon is there but it cannot be seen . 4-So the word Kala is a unit of measure of one’s power, or by what degree one has blossomed or progressed. So, someone may be like a half-moon, someone else may have reached to three quarters of the moon and so on. This was a means of measurement in the ancient days. 5-In those days, it was said that the life or Prana in a stone is equal to one Kala, the water element is said to have two Kalas. Fire has three Kalas, Vayu (Air element) has four, and the Space or Akash has five. Plants and trees are said to have six Kalas. Animals have seven Kalas. Human beings have eight Kalas. 6-If it is an extraordinary human being then he is said to have nine Kalas. It is said that Lord Parashurama (one of the ten avatars of Lord Vishnu) had nine Kalas. They say Lord Rama has 12 Kalas. Lord Hanuman is greater than Him in this regard and is said to have 14 Kalas. That is why he could help Lord Rama. Only a person who is stronger than us can help us. 7-The Devi (Mother Divine) is called Shodashakala (The One with all 16 Divine qualities or attributes). It means that she possess all divine and noble qualities, and lacks nothing. Lord Krishna too is said to have all 16 Kalas, which is why He is called as the Solah Kala sampurna or the Purna Avataar. To have all 16 Kalas means to possess all the 16 qualities or signs attributed to the total blossoming and manifestation of Divinity. 8-If you see the Devi, on one side she is so beautiful and full of love and grace, but on the other side, she is also Maa Kali (one of her more terrifying and violent manifestations). She is graceful and serene, but at the same time she also has a terrifying and violent aspect to Her as. Goddess Durga is very terrifying and awe-inspiring, while Goddess Lakshmi is very calm and graceful. 9-You can see all the opposite aspects of Divinity coming together in the Devi. The all-bestowing Goddess Lakshmi rides the harmless owl (the mount), and the vanquisher (to conquer)of evil and ignorance, Goddess Durga rides the fierce lion.Just imagine, where would you see both the owl, and the lion.. 10-In the same way Lord Krishna is also said to have possessed all the Solah Kalas. In Lord Krishna, you see the complete and total manifestation of Divinity in every way. He is so complete. He is the King of thieves. He does not steal small things, he steals away our very mind. That is why He is called as Chita-Chora (the beautiful One who completely captures and steals away the mind). 11-He is also called as Ranchhodrai (meaning the cowardly one who flees the battlefield) in Gujarat. They say that He ran away from the battlefield in the middle of the war. But on the other side He lifted up the Sudarshan Chakra (the Lord’s divine discus) to defeat Bhishma Pitamaha (the grandsire of the Pandavas and the Kauravas in the Mahabharata). So He is very brave and valiant too. 12-So, on one side he is very brave and on the other side he is like a coward. One cannot even imagine how complete he is. He is obedient as well, but He is also the one who breaks the rules. In the Bhagawat, it is mentioned at many places that Lord Krishna is perfect and complete in every possible aspect. That is why it is said that one should not emulate Lord Krishna . We should follow the path of Lord Rama and listen to Lord Krishna; Don’t walk in the way that Lord Krishna did, because to know him is very difficult for a jnani also.. . ARE THESE KALAS RULED BY THE SIXTEEN NITYA DEVIS ?- 04 FACTS;- 1-These 16 kalas are ruled by the 16 Nitya Devis. They are called Shodasa Nityas. They are: 1.Maha Tripura Sundari 2.Kameswari 3.Bhagamalini 4.Nityaklinna, 4.Nityaklinna 6.Vanhivasini 7.MahaVajreswari 8.Shivadooti (Roudri) 9.Twarita 10.Kulasundari 11.Nitya 12.Neelapataka 13.Vijaya 14.Sarvamangala 15.Jwalamalini 16.Chidroopa (Chitra) 2-Out of these, the first one, Maha Tripura Sundari is the Devi Para Shakti herself, and hence the kala ruled by her is not visible to the normal mortals. Hence we see only the other 15 kalas or phases ruled by the other nityas. In the Sri Chakra these 15 nityas are present in the innermost circle, and the Devi is in the central bindu. 3-These 15 Nityas rule the famous 15 letters Devi mantra known as Panchadasakshari Mantra:- Ka E Aie La Hreem Ha Sa Ka Ha La Hreem Sa Ka La Hreem. 4-These 15 Nityas in the form of the 15 Tithis (Phases) have two aspects each - Prakashamsa, which rules the day portion of the Tithi, and Vimarshamsa, which rules the night part of the Tithi. At night they collect the divine nectar and during the day they release it.CONTD. .......SHIVOHAM......
