IMPORTANCE OF CHANTING SHRI GURUDEV DATTA ;-

In the recent times, since spiritual practice and the rituals of shraddha (Rites for the deceased) are not performed as before, most people face problems due to the subtle-bodies of ancestors. Only evolved individuals can advise if there is a possibility of a problem in the future or if an existing problem is due to the subtle-bodies of deceased ancestors.

2-If you are not fortunate enough to be guided by an evolved individual, then inferring that inability to find a suitable marriage partner, marital disharmony, inability to conceive, miscarriages, giving birth to a premature child, giving birth to a retarded or handicapped child, deaths in childhood etc. are problems which could be due to subtle-bodies of deceased ancestors, undertake spiritual practice as advised ahead.

HOW TO CHANT THE MANTRA?-

1-Depending on the intensity of ancestral problems in home, you can chant this mantra. For mild problems start with 15 minutes per day and increase it to one hour. For moderate problems start with 30 minutes a day and increase it to 2 hours. For severe problems, begin with 45 minutes a day and raise it to about 4 hours.

2-However, in case of severe problems, you are also advised to take the competent help of pundits to perform rites( such as Nārāyana Nāgbali, Nagbali, Tripindi shrāadha, Kalsarpashanti).

1. To prevent problems or to overcome a mild problem, chant ‘Shri Gurudev Datta’ daily for one to two hours. At other times, to prevent problems arising out of destiny and for spiritual progress, an average individual or seeker in the primary stage should chant the Name of his Kuladevata (Family Shri) as much as is possible.

2. If the problem is moderate in nature, chant ‘Shri Gurudev Datta’ along with the Name of your Kuladevata for two to four hours daily. Also, go to a Datta temple every Thursday and perform seven circumambulations, and chant one to two malas of ‘Shri Gurudev Datta’ in the temple. Do this for about a year. After this, chant three malasof ‘Shri Gurudev Datta’ everyday.

3. If the problem is severe in nature, chant ‘Shri Gurudev Datta’ for atleast four to six hours daily.

The following are some indicators of the severity of distress;-

Note: If the difficulties are severe, then one could also be advised to perform specific spiritual rituals.

IMPORTANCE OF CHANTING IN PITRAPAKSHA;-

By chanting the Name of Shri Datta in Pitrupaksha(The dark fortnight of the Hindu lunar month of Bhadrapad, when rites are performed for the deceased ancestors), the onward sojourn of the ancestors is faster. Hence, during this period, chant for atleast six hours (or seventy-two malas) daily.

The protective chant of Jaya Gurudev Datta represents the Name of Lord Datta, an aspect of God.

CAN CHANTING PROVIDE PROTECTION FROM DISTRESS..CAUSED BY ANCESTORS?-

1-ARE THE ANCESTORS GAINING MOMENTUM?-

1-Majority of people in Kaliyug do not perform spiritual practice and hence, they are entrapped in Maya. As a result, their subtle-bodies remain dissatisfied after death. Such dissatisfied subtle-bodies get entrapped in the Martyalok (Region of the dead, situated between the earth and the Nether region).

2-By chanting the Name of Shri Dattatreya, the ancestors entrapped in Martya gain momentum. Thereafter, depending on their karma they advance to progressively higher regions. Thus, automatically the trouble caused by them to their descendants on the earth reduces.

3-Some people build the last resting place for their deceased family members in front of or beside their residence and regularly worship them with flowers. As a sign of affection and remembrance, their photographs are put up in the house.

4-In some places, to commemorate the ancestors it is a tradition to keep coins in the temple at home. All these acts entrap the subtle-bodies of the deceased family members in such places. Consequently, their spiritual sojourn is obstructed and they also have to undergo suffering.

5-King Bhagirath performed severe austerities to liberate his ancestors, and brought Ganga onto the earth. This is an ideal example of repaying the debt unto ancestors.

6-If we keep our ancestors entrapped in gross objects as mentioned above and do not chant etc. to provide them with momentum, we fail to repay the debt unto the ancestors.

7-In such cases, since they remain distressed, they create obstacles in our spiritual practice. To repay the debt unto our ancestors and to provide them with momentum, we should chant ‘Shri Gurudev Datta’ and perform shraddha for them.

2- CREATION OF A PROTECTIVE SHEATH;-

Energy generated by chanting the Name of Shri Datta creates a protective sheath around the individual chanting the Name.

However, the extent of benefit depends on the quantity and quality of our chanting, which besides other factors, depends on our spiritual level.

1-The protective chant of Shri Gurudev Datta represents the Name of Shri Datta, an aspect of God. One of His functions in the Universe is alleviating distress caused due to the subtle bodies of ancestors.

2-God carries out His mission in the Universe through the three major principles of Creation, Sustenance and Destruction. Shri Datta’s ability is derived through a combination of these three major principles of God i.e. Creation 10%, Sustenance 80% and Destruction 10%.

3-His manifest divine energy is 10% while 90% of His divine energy is

unmanifest.The concept that our deceased ancestors can cause trouble in our lives is very alien to us. However people have experienced an immense improvement in their lives by repeating Shri Datta’s holy Name of ‘Shri Gurudev Datta’

GLORY OF GURUDEV DATTATREYA;-

1-He is the embodiment of the Holy Trinity consisting of Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Shiva. Lord Dattatreya thereby has the combined characteristics of the Trinity. Lord Dattatreya is considered as the Guru of all Gurus.

2-This incarnation of the Protector, the Creator, and the Destroyer is said to be very kind to his worshipers and bless them with all they need.

Shri Datta is usually illustrated with a cow representing Bhoomi Devi and 4 dogs at his feet representing the 4 Vedas.

3-He has 3 heads symbolizing the unity of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. He also represents the time (present, the past, and future) and the 3 main aspects of the Universe – destruction, creation, and preservation.

4-He was born to Sage Atri and Anasuya as a result of the boon she received from the Trinity who tested her.Lord Vishnu, Lord Brahma, and Lord Shiva were immensely pleased by her that they showed their initial form and blessed Anusuya that she will give birth a son who will be the embodiment of the three Lords.

5-The word ”Datta” literally translates as ”Given”. As he was given as a son to the sage couple Atri and Anasuya, he is otherwise called as Atreya.

Dattatreya Upanishad is a Hindu sacred text dedicated to the Him. It is one of 108 Upanishads (written in Sanskrit).

6-It belongs to the Vaishnava sect, which adores the god Vishnu, and is affiliated with the Atharvaveda. This Upanishad shows up in the listing of 108 Upanishads in the Muktika canon. It is calculated at 110 in the Atharvaveda section.

7-The rishi Dattatreya is praised as a form of Vishnu and mantras devoted to the deity and used in his worship are listed. This sacred writing is believed to be sacred to the Dattatreya sampradaya sect.

MEANING OF MARTYA LOK(मर्त्य लोक);-

1-The Bhu Loka is the starting world, which is subdivided into Martya Loka, Preta Loka, Naraka Loka and Pitru Loka.

2-The lowest Martya Loka is the region in which the human beings live with materialized human bodies. As we go up, the matter gets transformed into energy.

3-In Pitru Loka, the body has a lot of energetic-phase and very little matter-phase. After pitru loka, the next bhuvar loka starts in which all the bodies are of complete energy. The respiratory and digestive systems in the body, become weaker and weaker as we go to Pitru Loka.

4-The souls in Pitru Loka, take almost moonlight as their main food in which the concept of matter becomes almost negligible. The souls in the Pitru Loka or moon are almost having energetic bodies.

BENEFITS OF JAPA;-

1-The Dattatreya mantra provides a kind of shield around the chanters and protects us from the problems caused by the ancestors. The effects of Pitrudosh and Pitru Shaap gradually decline when chanting this mantra.

2- Dattatreya mantra can relieve the souls of ancestors that are struck in some heavenly planes and lead them in their journeys to heavens. Since these souls cannot help themselves, we can help them by chanting the mantra on their behalf staying on the earth.

3- Since Lord Dattatreya is the combined form of Lord Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva – the Hindu trinity, this form is a highly powerful one in blessing the devotees with abundance, prosperity and happiness. Chanting this mantra can help in attaining all the desires of an individual.

4-This is a pacifying mantra which gives protection for the house and its occupants. Moreover, it is also recited to avoid as well as negate all kind of ill effects and black magic.

5-Praying to Shri Datta also makes one fearless, prevents nervousness, and makes one intelligent. It is acknowledged that reciting these sacred mantras can help the practitioner counteract the malignant influences of the planets and bring joy and peace.

6-Other than that, chanting of this soothing mantra also prevents nightmares, ill luck, evil-eyes, nightmares, and protection from evil spirits and curses.

7-The one great thing about Dattatreya mantra is that while resorting to chanting it, you need not give up worshipping your family deity or Ishta Devta. In fact, beginning and ending your regular puja with the chanting of Dattatreya mantra is said to propitiate your Ishta Devta more and win you more blessings.

Shri Dattatreya Kavacham

Shri Dattatreya Kavacham is in Sanskrit. It is a beautiful creation of Shri Vasudevanand Saraswati. This Kavacham is very pious and powerful however we have to recite it with faith, devotion and concentration to receive what is desired. This Kavacham is a prayer made to Shri Datta Guru by his devotee. In the prayer devotee is requesting Shri Datta Guru by calling him with various pious names; to protect his (devotee’s) all parts of the body, his organs which gives him knowledge, and his organs which work for him and to protect from all ten directions, in the house/body and out of the house/body.

1) Shri Laxmi stays at the feet of Shri Dattatreya. Hence let Shri Dattatreya protect my feet. Let Shri Dattatreya who sits in Siddasana posture, protect my thighs. Let Digambar protect my anus and my reproductive organs. Let Nruhari protect my waist.

2) Let Jagatsastra protect my navel. Let Dalodara protect my stomach. Let Krupalu protect my heart. Let Shatbhuja protect my shoulders.

3) Shri Dattatreya has held Mala, Kamandalu, Trishula, Damaru, Shankha and Chakra in his six hands, Let my hands be protected by him. Let Kambukantha protect my throat. Let Sumukha protect my mouth.

4) Let Vedvak protect my tongue. Let Divadruk protect my eyes. Let Gandhatma protect my nose. Let Punyashrava protect my ears.

5) Let my forehead be protected by Hansatma. Let my head be protected by Jatadhara. Let my organs which work for me by Ishwara and my organs which give me knowledge be protected Aja.

6) Let my conscience be protected by Sarvantara. Let my Pranan be protected by the king of Yogies. Let Yogiraj protect me from all ten directions.

7) Let Shri Gurudev Datta who can take many forms/incarnations; protect me in and out of the house/body. Let anything which is not covered by this Kavacha, be protected by Divadrushti.

8) Let Gurudev Datta protect me from tyrant government, enemies, wield animals, bad things performed to trouble me, my sins, mental diseases and disease of my body, and all other troubles, difficulties.

9) Let son of Anusuya protect my money, food, my house, my wife, my children’s, my pets, my servants and my relatives.

10) Let Balonmatta protect me in day, night and the period in between day and night from all pancha mahabhutas (earth, water, fire, air and sky) and from death.

11) Anybody reciting this Datta Kavacham with devotion and faith will become free from all his troubles, difficulties and so also from troubles by planets such as Saturn, Mars etc.

12) Ghosts, Demons etc. can’t trouble such devotee who recites this Kavacha daily. He will become happy, all his desires will be fulfilled, become successful in his endeavors and lead a healthy, wealthy and peaceful life. After his death he will go to Datta Loka.
