SIGNIFICANCE OF SWAR YOG;-
14 FACTS;-
1-THE SWARODAY SHASTRA - THE SECRET OF ALL SECRETS of Human Body as well as Universe & other Universe"
1-A-"This science of Swaras is the secret of all Secrets and reveals the Secret of the essence of all Frequency, Vibrations & Energies Practices & benefits. This science is the subtle crest jewel of all True, Pure, Absolute knowledge".
1-B-"The Veda, All Shastra, Ayruveda, Yoga & Meditation, Mantra Yoga, Hindustani Music, All Hindustanti Dances, Astrology, Vastu Shastra & so forth & Universe & other Universe without knowledge of the Swaras, a house without an owner, a mouth without Shastras, and a body without a head, one never acclaimed"."
2-The Swarodaya Shastra also gives many more details of the 5 elements (Panchabhutas ; Earth, Air, Water, Fire & Ether), from Akash (ether) Air, from Air is Fire, from Fire is Water & from Water Earth is created and based on the Swara, a detailed art of prediction of diseases, sex of the child, divination and answering almost any question.
3-Swara Shastra also gives various breathing techniques and meditations for each element (Panchabhutas) as related to the Chakras and a wealth of much more varied and interesting information."
4-Thus the nostrils are switches . By controlling the speed, rate, rhythm, length and duration of the breath, by altering the ratio of inhalation to exhalation, by stopping breath, we can activate or tone down neurological and mental processes so as to achieve heightened awareness, altered states of Consciousness and even the ultimate goal of liberation itself. Verily SWARA is lord MAHE 'SWARA' himself....
5-The part and whole of the Universe are made up of Swaras. The Creator and Destroyer of the Universe is really the Swara in the form of Mahe'swara' .
6-Shiva the lord of Yogis to Goddess Parvati in the "Siva Swarodaya"
"If one has the strength of Swaras then he should attack his foe or meet his friend. Wealth, fame, pleasure and comfort are all obtained through the strength of Swaras.
7-The human brain is undoubtedly one of the most amazing, incredible and wondrous of Nature's creation. It contains twelve thousand million cells and each of these cells has an estimated five hundred thousand possible interconnections that we know of. It is said that when the mathematics is computed there are more possible interconnections in the brain than there are atoms in the universe...
8-The upper brain has two parts the right and left hemispheres. Scientific study of the hemispheres of the brain by Roger Sperr H.S. Gazzaniga and others has shown us specialization of function in each hemisphere. The left side of the brain is usually associated with speed, logic, analysis, time and linear function where as the right side is concerned with intuitive feeling, spatial, holistic in function, and does not require linear structured analysis for its knowledge.
9-The Right hemisphere controls the left side of the body while the left hemisphere controls the right side of the body ."The fact that eighty percent of us are right handed shows the leaning towards left hemisphere. (It should be remembered that the left hemisphere controls the right hand).
10-A closer look would reveal that human languages have built into them a polarity, a veer to the right.""Right" is associated with correct behavior, legality, high moral principles and masculinity. "Left" is associated with weakness, cowardice, and diffusiveness of purpose, evil and femininity. Words like 'Righteous', 'Rights', 'in his right mind' etc., are examples for the same."
11-While there is a definite trend to separate modes of function nowadays, each hemisphere must work in an integrated fashion. Admitting the validity of both modes of functioning- left hemisphere and right hemisphere- we must ponder if they are equally effective and useful in all circumstances.
12-No doubt the right hemisphere's intuitive thinking may perceive patterns and connections too difficult for the left hemisphere, but it may also detect patterns where none exist. Along with the intuitive creative genius of right hemisphere we equally need the verbal analytic intellectual thinking of the left hemisphere.
13-Only when both the hemispheres of the brain are working together ...The most significant creative activities of any culture - legal and ethical systems, art and music, science and technology - were made possible only through the collaborative work of the left and right cerebral hemispheres.
14-These creative acts though engaged in rarely or only by a few, have changed the world and our lives. In fact human culture is the function of both right and left hemispheres in collaboration & The practices of Yoga and Tantra, are aimed precisely at that.
MEANING & APPLICATION OF SWAR YOG;-
12 FACTS;-
1- The word SWARA in Sanskrit, means sound or musical note; it also means the continuous flow of air through one nostril. And we all know that YOGA means union. So Swara Yoga is the science which is about the realization of cosmic consciousness, through the awareness or observation, then control or manipulation of the flow of breath in the nostrils.
2-Swara Yoga is science which is a complete study, observations, control and manipulation of breath or Swara. Pranayama is only related to control of breath in various ways. In swara yoga, you will find association of breath in relation to activities of sun, moon, various seasons, physical and mental conditions of individuals etc. So Swara Yoga is more comprehensive in theory and practices related to breath.
3-Swara yoga is an ancient tantric science which involves the systematic study of the breath flow through the nostrils (or swara) in relation to the prevailing phases of the moon, time of day and direction .
4-Although we think of 'pranayama' when we think of techniques associated with the breath, in Swara yoga, it is the association of the breath in relation to the activities or phases or positions of the sun, moon, planets, seasons, time of day, with the physical and mental conditions of the individual and then taking the appropriate action according to these subtle relations.
5-For example, knowing the moon phases and checking the flow of your nostrils before you get out of bed in the morning and letting the corresponding foot be the first to touch the floor and make the first step, is a simple practice that ensures success in everything that happens for that day. The first foot to touch the ground will get the prevailing 'successful' flow of energy from the cosmos.
6-Swara yoga is an ancient science existing since before the Vedic period, over ten thousand years ago. It was a secret science, only available for the select few, specially kings and dedicated sadhaks. It was kept as a closed secret by the ancient sages and saints who had intuitively received this knowledge from the Divine.
7-This ancient divine knowledge was available only for sadhaks, to those who had risen above the worldly and mundane affairs of life, those who had a spiritual attitude, and the dedication and devotion of a disciple, so that this precious knowledge was kept pure and it didn't go into the wrong hands. It was used for yearly predictions and other divinations.
8- It was used for those who had mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual problems so that they could get rid of their problems by using this divine knowledge of Swara Yoga. Also, it was useful for the Grahastha, the householder, in day to day matters. It was commonly used for general future predictions as well as in special cases such as making wars go according to the wishes of the king, or for having a divine child.
9-It was used to choose an auspicious time, start special jobs, journeys, wars, building etc. and for creating harmony in world affairs, predicting the time of death, and to deal with planetary effects, astral forces and negative effects of planets of the zodiac and the constellations.
10-Through the knowledge of swara yoga one can become free from all kinds of negative influences of one's destiny and can achieve heightened awareness. The swara yoga practices related to breath were used understand the governing forces of life, to understand the nature of the universe and effects of the elements on body and mind by observing the different patterns of breath.
11-Further, it was used to go beyond the limitations of the mind. Swara yoga is a tantric science coming from the Agama Shastras and from Shaiva Tantra, where Lord Siva is the guru and Shakti is the disciple She asks questions about nature and the governing forces of the universe. Lord Siva gives this precious knowledge of swara yoga to Shakti. Other tantric traditions also existed such as Surya tantra, Ganapatya tantra and Vaishnava tantra. Today only two tantric techniques are commonly available, Saiva and Shakta tantra.
12-The fascinating thing about Swara yoga is that just by being aware of the swara (dominant nostril) in relation to the environment, you can manipulate the results of what you are about to do. In other words, you can find out which is going to be the successful route and then follow it. It can be as simple as checking your nostrils before setting out of the house, noting the direction you wish to go in and then choosing the appropriate foot with which you will make your first step, to ensure success and positive outcomes for everything that follows thereafter.

BASICS OF SWAR YOG;-
11 FACTS;-
1-Ida and pingala nadis are responsible for our existence in this world. Yogis and sages have seen and realized this.
The entire universe is comprised of two forces, consciousness and energy, which are interdependent and opposite, yet complementary. The universe hangs as a kind of web of interacting energies, suspended and functioning within the framework of tensions developed by this fundamental polarity.
2- Wherever one looks, within nature, within the body and within the mind, this polarity can be seen as light and dark, positive and negative, male and female and so on. At every level, these two great principles are at work, creating and motivating the universe. . .
3-When this cosmic polarity of prana and consciousness manifests in the microcosmic unit of the human body, it takes the form of chitta shakti and prana shakti, which correspond to ida nadi and pingala nadi.
4-These two mental and physical channels within the body apply to all levels of being from gross to subtle, forming the basis for every perception, activity and experience. They represent two distinct forces within the human environment - the ebb and flow of human existence.
5-Pingala regulates energy in the body, and ida regulates consciousness. These two nadis nourish the two hemispheres of our brain, which then control each and every activity of the body and mind. When the right nostril flows more freely, representing the activity of pingala, our left hemisphere is dominant and we are extroverted, active, physically fitter and we feel warmer because our metabolism is in a dynamic state - exhibiting the solar qualities of our nature.
6-When the left nostril flows more freely, representing the activity of ida, our right hemisphere is dominant and we become more introverted, passive, fitter for mental and artistic work, and we feel colder because our metabolism slows down - exhibiting the lunar side of our nature.
7-The purpose of yoga is to awaken and balance ida and pingala, to enable pranic energy to flow and illumine the dark and sleepy areas of consciousness so that we wake up and realize our full potential as human beings.
8-Scientific research supports the physiological concepts of swara yoga, and provides insight into some of the mechanisms by which the effects of pranayama practices are mediated.
9-The left hemisphere predominantly deals with logical, verbal, mathematical and analytical thinking, guiding our actions in the outer world of pingala, while the right hemisphere governs intuitive, integrative thinking that recognizes patterns in the world around us, leading us into the inner world and deeper understanding of ida.
10-We can conclude that scientific research findings so far support the yogic concept of ida and pingala as the two main lines on the switchboard of our mind that handle very specific aspects of our perception, thinking, emotions and behaviour. In the integrated evolution of human beings, the right hemisphere or ida, the mental energy domain, takes care of music and art awareness, three-dimensional perception, creativity and imagination, insight and intuition.
11-The left side, the domain of vital energy or pingala, takes care of written and spoken language, dealing with numbers and abstract problems, rational decision-making, accurate judgement and discrimination. To live life fully and evolve in a harmonious way we need both kinds of abilities. Therefore, achieving and maintaining balance between the right and left brain, between ida and pingala, has very real implications in our daily life, in the way we function, interact, grow and evolve. And here swara yoga does come in the picture.
SCIENCE & SWAR YOGA;-
07 FACTS;-
1-Yogis investigating the science of swara yoga have discovered that the activity of ida nadi, the right brain, correlates to the airflow in the left nostril, and that pingala activity correlates to the airflow in the left nostril. They also found that for most of the time one nostril flows more freely than the other and that this alternate dominance of one nostril over the other and the switch between the two happens in regular cycles of approximately 90 minutes, throughout the day and throughout life. Only during the brief periods of change do both nostrils flow equally, indicating the flow of prana through sushumna.
2-In scientific terms, the nasal cycle is defined as a side-to-side fluctuation in nasal engorgement and airflow, or as alternating congestion and decongestion of the nasal turbinates, the bony prominences within the nasal cavity covered with mucosal lining, very rich in blood and nerve supply. It has been found that this happens in periods ranging from approximately one to five hours. This cycle is produced by alterations in the autonomic tone of the nasal blood vessels. Research data confirms the basic postulate of swara yoga that the airflow through the nostrils alternates in regular intervals and reflects the activities of the left and right hemispheres of the brain, of ida and pingala, the mental and vital energy in the body.
3-The sympathetic nervous system, for example, dominates one side of the body and at the same time the parasympathetic nervous system dominates the opposite side.On the psychological level, there are studies that show a correlation between breathing predominantly through one nostril and the corresponding increase in brain activity in the opposite hemisphere, leading to increased cognitive performance specific to that hemisphere.
4-Research studies affirm the claim of swara yoga, indicating that the nasal rhythm within which the airflow through the nostrils alternates in dominance in approximately a 90-minute cycle is in fact a unique marker of corresponding alternate dominance of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems in the left and the right sides of the body, with far reaching physiological influence.
5-If we look at these scientific findings from the other direction, we can see how by manipulating the nasal breathing pattern with pranayama practices, we can actually induce substantial changes in the body, using the medium of the autonomous nervous system.
6-Research studies of the effects of nadi shodhana pranayama in the ratio 1:1 and 1:2 on healthy subjects showed improvement in speed in repetitive mathematical tasks, as well as in breath-holding time and peak expiratory flow.
7-These changes indicate positive changes in mental abilities and an increase in vitality. Also, the time periods in which both nostrils flowed equally increased significantly, indicating the purifying effects of nadi shodhana on the network of pranic energy channels, the nadis, and consequently a more balanced state of the autonomic nervous system.
WHAT IS SWAR CYCLE?-
13 FACTS;-
1-Swara yoga is about the effect of nasal breathing on our body and mind through right nostril, (Pingala Nadi) left nostril, Ida Nadi) both nostril (Shushumna Nadi). The different pattern and nature of breath indicates the active elements (Panch Mahabhutas ie. Earth, Water, Fire, Air, Ether) in our psychic body .
2-In Swara yoga, practices are connected with the flow of nadi in a systematic pattern with moon phases, Sun and other planets. Elements are connected with different planets in different nasal flow.
3-When a planet affect earth's gravitational field and electromagnetic field they will alter human energy patterns in the psychic body on feedback basis. This can be experienced as change in the flow of our breath. 4-Swara yoga identifies this as different elements. In order to balance and harmonize these subtle forces, Swara yoga gives the easy and effective tool - The time and cycle of breath. The cycle of breath is based the luner tithis (Moon's position at different times).
5-Tithi is considered as the first phase or portion (Kala) of the 16 phases of the Moon. The 15 days, commencing from Amavasya (the last day of the dark half of a lunar month) to Purnima (Full moon), are called the Tithis of the Shukla-Paksha or Waxing Moon (brighter phase) when moon becomes fuller and the days commencing from Purnima to Amavasya are called Krishna Paksha waning Moon (darker phase) when moon becomes darker. 6-In Indian Astrology, the calculation of the Tithis starts from Pratipada (The first day in each half of the lunar month) of the Shukla-Paksha.Similarly, in the Krishna-Paksha, starting from Pratipada till Chaturdashi, all the dates are same; the only difference being the fifteenth day which is Amavasya (No Moon or Moonless night)..
7-In Swara cycle right nostril becomes active during Krishna paksha on tithes Pratipada,(1) Dwitiya, ,(2) Tritiya, ,(3) Saptami, ,(7) Ashtami, ,(8) Navami, ,(9) Trayodashi, ,(13) Chaturdashi, ,(14) Amavasya,(15).
8-There after Ida and Pingala function alternately in 1-2 hour cycle throughout the day until, at sunset left nostril begins to function on the specified days.
9-On days 4 , 6, 10, 12, of dark fortnight (Krishna paksha) the left nostril flows at sunrise and right nostril at sunset. During shukla paksha we see the reverse. At sunrise of the first 3 days, left nostril flows and during sunset right and same alternate manner it goes on up to full moon. 10-Swara days chart is a fixed chart that show the nostril dominance on particular phases of the moon known as tithis. Every day there will be a tithi and according to that you have to change the flow of your breath.
11-For ex. 5th APRIL 2018 the tithi was saptami and during sunrise right nostril is (Pingala swara) recommended in chart for flow and the same day left nostril (Ida swara) should flow during sun-set.When you will calculate the tithi other things of panchanga will come because panchanga means five angas of indian lunar calendar.
12-For swara yoga sadhana (practices) first three are required ie. weekdays, tithi and naxhatra. But for beginners first one month they should observe the breath to know the pattern and imbalances. And form next month they should start manipulation or change in the flow of breath according to dates.
13-THE KEY POINT;-
1-In cycle of Swara, the time of sunrise and sun set is an important consideration. In summer, the sun rises earlier then in winter, and the time is constantly changing throughout the year. The time will also differ according to the exact location and hemisphere of the continent on which one is living.
2-The flow of breath during sunrise according to Swara yoga cycle should start 24 minute before actual sunrise 12 minute during the rise from the horizon and 24 minute after completion of rise same way during sunset.
If tithi is not same during sunrise and sunset for that day whatever Nadi is given in the chart, avoid and flow your right nostril during sunrise and left nostril during moon rise.See the chart below......
BENEFITS OF SWARA RHYTHMS;-
05 FACTS;-
In the 1970’s science coined the word ‘chronopsychology’ for the 24 hour cycle. Chronopsychologists found that during the 24 hour cycle certain events and one’s mental, emotional and physical abilities have a ‘best’ or ‘most favorable’ time of day.
2-Swara yoga says the same, and further specifies the times when tasks are either auspicious or inauspicious. Swara yogi knows that during the flow of left nostril or right nostril when favorable elements rises certain things can be undertaken if you want to be successful.
3-Scientists have postulated(assume the existence) that external forces set the biological clock by stimulating the pineal gland, which is affected by dark/light cycles. These rhythms which were previously known to the ancient Rishis, so man is actually only rediscovering himself in relation to the cosmos.
4-By the practice of Swara yoga one can become the master of the nadis and elements, so as to adjust himself with the universal forces which is the source of everything that gives birth to the experience of both material and spiritual life with heightened awareness.
5-By properly practicing Swara yoga, directly under an adept one can definitely achieve success in all spheres of lives.
THE THREE TYPES OF SWARA IN NUTSHELL;-
There are 3 main types of Swara, namely Ida Nadi or Left Swara, Pingala Nadi or Right Swara and the “Sushumna” Swara.
1-IDA NADI ( Left Swara)
The Ida Nadi is essentially the art of breathing through the left nostril and this point is located on the left side of the spinal cord. This Swara is associated with mental fitness and relaxation --- it is a sign of the Moon.
A-Active days
The left Swara is active on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Monday --- it is connected to both the right and left hemisphere of the brain.

B-Things to do
It is said that when your left Swara is active, you should do all auspicious activities such as purchasing a house, buying jewellery, getting married or going on a spiritual journey.
2-PINGLA NADI ( Right Swara)
Again, this is associated with breathing through the right nostril and is located on the right side of the spinal cord. It represents the Sun and stands for physical activities and hard work.
A-Active days
The Right Swara is active on Saturday, Tuesday and is more active in the sunsigns Aries, Aquarius, Libra, Gemini and Sagittarius.
B-The tough Swara
The right Swara is known as a tough Swara, so it is said that one can indulge in activities like tantric practices and other risky jobs during this period.
C-Mental activities
This is also the right time to indulge in intense physical exercises and sharpen our brain by solving complex problems and puzzles.
3-THIRD NADI “SUSHUMNA ”(Third Swara);-
This Swara is located in the centre of the spinal cord --- this is known as a mundane Swara since no work done during this Swara will reap any benefits. It is connected to Shiva.
