06 FACTS;- 1-The imaginary line around which the Earth spins is called the axis of rotation. Because the Earth's axis points at an angle of 23.5 degrees away from the axis of the Sun's rotation, the Earth experiences seasonal changes in weather. 2-During the summer months, the Earth's North Pole tilts toward the sun, creating warmer weather in the Northern Hemisphere. 3-During the autumn, both hemispheres receive roughly the same amount of sunlight, but when the North Pole tilts away from the sun, the Southern Hemisphere experiences the warmer weather. 4-However, the Earth spins on its axis similar to the movement of a top, and the dates for shifting seasons changes very gradually, on a cycle that lasts 25,800 years. Eventually, the summer and winter seasons for the two hemispheres will switch. 5-There are four imaginary lines on an earth globe/map.. A-The Equator; B-The Prime Meridian, C-The Tropic of Cancer D-The Tropic of Capricorn. 6-Only one continent has all four of these imaginary lines passing through it.Only in the Continent of Africa can you find all four of these imaginary lines. The Equator is in central Africa (running east/west); while the Prime Meridian is in West Africa (running north/south). The Tropic of Cancer runs across northern Africa while the Tropic of Capricorn runs across southern Africa. No other continent has all four of these lines crossing its territory. RELATED WORDS;- (Imaginary lines around the earth ) Related words 1-The Antarctic Circle an imaginary line around the Earth at the South Pole 2-The Arctic Circle an imaginary line around the Earth near the North Pole 3-The date line the international date line 4-The equator an imaginary line that goes round the Earth and divides it into the northern and southern hemispheres 5-Equatorial near the equator, or typical of conditions near the equator 6-The international date line noun an imaginary line in the Pacific Ocean going from north to south that divides the world into two parts so that the date in the eastern half is one day earlier than the date in the western half. The international date line is often simply called the date line. 7-Latitude science the distance of a point on the Earth from the equator (=the imaginary line around the middle of the Earth), measured in degrees north or south 8-Longitude the distance east or west of the Greenwich meridian (=an imaginary line from the top of the Earth to the bottom), measured in degrees and minutes. Latitude is the distance north or south of the equator. 9-Longitudinal relating to or measured in longitude 10-Meridian one of the imaginary lines that goes around the Earth from the North Pole to the South Pole. These are used for measuring position, time etc. 11-Parallel an imaginary line around the Earth at a fixed distance from the equator 12-Tropic one of the two imaginary lines around the Earth on either side of the equator. The Tropic of Cancer is 23° 26’ north of it and the Tropic of Capricorn is 23° 26’ south of it. WHY DO WE DRAW THE IMAGINARY LINE ON THE GLOBE/MAP ? 02 FACTS ;- 1-The imaginary line around the globe are very important because are drawn for navigation and geographic information. These lines are helpful in determining location of an object around the globe. Distances of the objects are also found due to these lines. 2-The equator is very important because it determines seasons with respect to sun position. LATITUDE & LONGITUDE;- 03 FACTS ;- 1-Every location on earth has a global address. Because the address is in numbers, people can communicate about location no matter what language they might speak. A global address is given as two numbers called coordinates. The two numbers are a location's latitude number and its longitude number ("Lat/Long"). 2-Imaginary line drawn parallel to the equator which run east to west on earth’s surface are called latitudes. There are 181 line of latitude. 3-Difference between latitudes and longitudes. 1. Latitudes run east to west. 1. Longitudes run north to south. 2. There are 180 lines of latitudes 2. There are 360 lines of longitude 3. The largest latitude equator divide the earth into northern hemisphere and southern hemisphere. 3. The longitude prime meridian divide the earth into eastern hemisphere and western hemisphere. 4. Latitudes are parallel and never meet each other. 4. Longitudes are not parallel and meet at poles. 5-Notable lines of Latitudes...Equator, Tropic of Cancer, Tropic of Capricorn 5-Notable lines of Longitude.. Greenwich Meridian WHAT IS PRIME MERIDIAN ? 05 FACTS ;- 1-The longitude that passes through the observation at Greenwich near london is the prime meridian and is numbered 0º. 2-Longitude lines are a numerical way to show/measure how far a location is east or west of a universal vertical line called the Prime Meridian. This Prime Meridian line runs vertically, north and south, right over the British Royal Observatory in Greenwich England, from the North Pole to the South Pole. 3-As the vertical starting point for longitude, the Prime Meridian is numbered 0 degrees longitude. 4-To measure longitude east or west of the Prime Meridian, there are 180 vertical longitude lines east of the Prime Meridian and 180 vertical longitude lines west of the Prime Meridian, so longitude locations are given as degrees east or degrees west. 5-The 180 degree line is a single vertical line called the International Date Line, and it is directly opposite of the Prime Meridian. WHAT IS A GRID ? A network of lines formed by latitudes and longitudes. WHAT IS THE IMPORTANCE OF THE INTERNATIONAL DATE LINE ? The 180º longitude is also called the International date line. The moment you cross to the east of it you gain or add a day, and if you cross to the west of it you loose or subtract a day. WHY IS THE EARTH TILTED ? 03 FACTS;- 1-Astronomers theorize that over 4.5 billion years ago,Theia, an object about the size of Mars, collided with Earth to create a tilted axis. This is called "the giant impact theory." Prior to this event, the axis was straight at 180 degrees. 2-The theory holds that as Theia collided with the Earth, the mantle and elements flew into space, creating the materials for the moon. Scientists named Theia after the Greek god Titan. 3-The 23.5-degree tilt of the axis sustains life on Earth and produces seasons. Since the Earth rotates on an angle, no portion receives the brunt of the heat from the sun. Agriculture and many species rely upon the season changes from the tilted axis. HOW DOES THE EARTH MOVE?- 03 FACTS;- 1-The Earth moves by rotating or spinning on its own axis and by going around the sun in its orbit in a process called revolution. The Earth's rotation on its axis takes place at a constant speed of 1, 040 miles per hour and goes around the sun at a constant speed of 67, 000 miles per hour. 2-The Earth is always rotating from the west towards the east and takes 24 hours to complete its rotation. Revolution of the Earth around the sun takes 365 days or one year. All other celestial objects, including the sun and moon, are also in constant motion. WHAT IS THE ANGULAR VELOCITY OF EARTH ?- 03 FACTS;- 1-The angular velocity(speed ) of the Earth around its axis is 0.000417 degrees per second. The angular velocity of the Earth around the sun is 0.986 degrees per day. 2-The Earth can be thought of as simultaneously rotating, or turning, on its axis throughout the cycle of a 24-hour day and rotating around the sun once each year, creating the seasons. 3-Therefore, this question has two answers depending upon which rotation of the Earth is considered. These values can be calculated with a high degree of accuracy because the Earth's velocity around its axis and around the sun are both known constants. ....SHIVOHAM...
