There are different shades of meaning between the idea of the soul and the idea of the spirit that change from culture to culture and religion to religion. They are far to vast to accurately describe here, but below you will see a brief overview of the differences between the soul and the spirit. IN HINDUISM------ Soul need to be core-self and as defined by Shankaracharya as CHIT ANAND RUPA SHIVOHAM SHIVOHAM. Thus soul is consciousness which is a continuum filled with bliss and is pure (seraphic). This is surrounded by five KOSHA while one is alive and one identifies oneself with these KOSHAs by ignorance of self. We are not these PANCHAKOSHAs (annamaya, pranmay, manomay, vidnyanmay & anandmay), we are beyond these. Soul is beyond these, while what we call as spirit as something that leaves body at the time of death has to be deprived of anna and prana and thus remaining three KOSHAs with soul is the remaining spirit. These three remaining KOSHAs preserve knowledge to reconstruct another body and partial knowledge. Thus, soul is a central core of our being, while spirit consists of soul and three KOSHAs with an ability to reconstruct body and this reenters suitable body and is reborn with part knowledge (of previous birth) sealed like a zip file, which is not easy to reopen .IN EASTERN CULTURE----- Soul ‘“ is the part of the person that has dharma, obligation, and incurs karma, debts, throughout his lifetime. The soul is then reborn into whatever shape will help it to release karma. This is a Hindu belief. Spirit ‘“ is often associated with the animism of Shinto. Natural forces, plants, and animals are inhabited with a life force that is translated into spirit. IN WESTERN CULTURE Soul ‘“ can often be taken to mean someone’s moral conscious. A cruel killer could be said to have no soul. Spirit ‘“ may reference ghosts or other supernatural beings. It is held that people who died with unfinished business leave their souls to wander the earth until their task is fulfilled
IN CATHOLICISM---- Soul ‘“ refers to your conscious and the moral and thinking part of you. Your soul is immortal and is the part that will go to hell, purgatory, or heaven after you die. At executions, the priest publicly asked God to have mercy on the soul of the condemned. Spirit ‘“ first refers to the Holy Spirit, the third part of the Trinity. It is the force of God that has come down into each of us. As one develops in the faith, he is said to be growing spiritually. IN BIBLE----- The soul and the spirit are the two primary immaterial aspects that Scripture ascribes to humanity. It can be confusing to attempt to discern the precise differences between the two. The word “spirit” refers only to the immaterial facet of humanity. Human beings have a spirit, but we are not spirits. However, in Scripture, only believers are said to be spiritually alive , while unbelievers are spiritually dead The spirit is the element in humanity which gives us the ability to have an intimate relationship with God. Whenever the word “spirit” is used, it refers to the immaterial part of humanity that “connects” with God, who Himself is spirit . The word “soul” can refer to both the immaterial and material aspects of humanity. Unlike human beings having a spirit, human beings are souls. In its most basic sense, the word “soul” means “life.” However, beyond this essential meaning, the Bible speaks of the soul in many contexts. One of these is humanity’s eagerness to sin . Humanity is naturally evil, and our souls are tainted as a result. The life principle of the soul is removed at the time of physical death . The soul, as with the spirit, is the center of many spiritual and emotional experiences Whenever the word “soul” is used, it can refer to the whole person, whether alive or in the afterlife. The soul and the spirit are connected, but separable The soul is the essence of humanity’s being; it is who we are. The spirit is the aspect of humanity that connects with God. TO CONCLUDE WE CAN SAY SOUL=ATMA & SPIRIT=JEEVATMA.....ATMA IS ALWAYS PURE BUT JEEVATMA DEPENDS PERSON TO PERSON ----MAY BE HOLY OR UNHOLY.....THE MAIN REASON OF HAUNTED HOUSE,,,,, & HAUNTED PLACE IS UNHOLY SPIRIT NOT SOUL..... SHIVOHAM
