WHO IS MURUGAN?--
08 FACTS---
1-Murugan is often referred to as “The god of the Tamils" and is worshiped primarily in areas with Tamil influences, especially South India, Mauritius, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore. His six most important shrines in India are the ‘Six Abodes of Murugan’, temples located in Tamil Nadu. 2-Murugan rides a peacock and wields a bow in battle, Lord Murugan is also regarded as Kumaraswami (Bachelor God), ‘Kumara’ meaning a bachelor and ‘Swami’ meaning God. 3-The Hero of the Skanda Purana is Lord Skanda Himself, known otherwise as Lord Subrahmanya. He is depicted with six faces and twelve hands. His Svarupa is Jyotirmaya (Form of light)... 4-On the earth plane, every human being is an outcome of the five elements and the spirit within him. When the Lord took the human form, He was accordingly depicted in the same manner.
5-Hence the spirit, signified by the sparks from SHiva, took the appearance of a human personality, whose body comprised the five elements and who is the Lord of them. But to distinguish Him from ordinary human beings, the author thought it better to bestow six faces and twelve hands for the Divine-man. 6-These six faces represent the following:-------- Five, one element each: Ether, air, fire, water and earth. The sixth face represents the Spirit that bestows LIFE to the beings formed by the five elements. 7- The Sanskrit word Bhagavan means one who is possessed of the six godly attributes. And each face of Lord Skanda personifies one of such functions or attributes of the Almighty. 8-In the Tamil scriptures a clear account of the functions of the six faces of the Lord is given.AS--
8-1-One face is shining to remove ignorance and bestow Knowledge;
8-2-Another fulfils the desires of devotees and attends to their needs;
8-3- A third face bestows strength and inspiration for the performance of rituals and sacrifices;
8-4- A fourth brings out the inner secrets and helps the seekers of knowledge by revealing those secrets to them; 8-5- A fifth face has the purpose of protecting the virtuous and punishing the wicked;
8-6-And the sixth face stands for that function of the Lord that ignites Love and bestows happiness amongst the Jivas. WHAT IS THE MEANING OF VEL?-------- The lance called Vel in Tamil is a weapon closely associated with him. The Vel was given to him by his mother, Parvati, and embodies her energy and power. In the war, Surapadman was split into two, and each half was granted a boon by Murugan. The halves, thus turned into the peacock and the rooster, his flag, which also "refers to the sun". Another myth is that after ‘Tarakasur’ (ego) was defeated by Lord Murugan, he became a rooster. Tarakasur lay at Lord’s feet, making rooster the flag. WHAT IS THE MEANING OF MURUGAN'S 2 WIVES----- The consorts of Lord Shanmukha are Valli and Deivayanai. Valli stands for the Iccha Sakti—the Power of Will. And the other, Deivayanai, stands for Kriya Sakti—the Power of Action. Thus should a Jiva aspiring to Godliness, having brought the will-power under control, strive ceaselessly till it reaches the goal. THE THREE SHAKTIS OF LORD--- Hence the three Shaktis, in the form of Vel—
1-Jnana Shakti (knowledge),
2-Iccha Shakti------Valli
3-Kriya Shakti-----Deivayanai
.. form part and parcel of Lord Shanmukha...
WHY HE IS KNOWN AS SHANMUKHA ?----
Then Goddess Parvati took the form of this water body as She alone could bear the energy of Shiva and Shakti. Finally the fire ball took the form of a baby with six faces. Hence, Kartikeya is also known as Shanmukha or the God with six faces.
He was first spotted and taken care of by six women who represented the Pleiades or the Kritikas. So, the divine child was known as Kartikeya or the son of the Kritikas. Later on, he becomes commander-in-chief of the Gods.Lord Shanmukha , who is also named as Shaktidhara. Glory to the Lord of the Shaktis!
Glory to the Lord who dispels ignorance amongst the devotees by His Velayudha( the spear).
WHY HIS FLAG CONTAINS A PICTURE OF ROOSTER(cock)?----
In due course, Tarakasur was defeated by Lord. So, Tarakasur (ego) became a chicken or rooster after being defeated by Kartikeya. After having defeated Taraka (ego) in battle, Kartikeya spared his life and asked him what boon he would desire. Taraka prayed to always be at the feet of the Lord, and so Lord Kartikeya made him the emblem on His flag. This means that ego should always be kept subdued. Ego is necessary in life but it should be kept subdued.

To rescue this ignorant Jiva wandering in the wilderness, the Guru appears in the form of Rishi Narada by whose help the wedding takes place between Valli and Lord Karttik, i.e., the holy communion of the Jiva with the Supreme Brahman. 3-As the Jiva possessed unflinching and unswerving faith in the Lord, Valli was determined to marry only Lord Shanmukha and was able to realise her ambition in spite of the many obstructions. Hence, having the two horns of Vairagya and Viveka, the Jiva, Valli, got herself finally rescued from the clutches of Maya—represented by her parents and other obstacles—and finally established herself in union with Lord Subrahmanya, the Supreme Abode of Bliss. 4-The two wives, Deivayanai and Valil (The first one is Valli -she was found in a pit, dug out while gathering the edible tubers of the valli-plant), the daughter of a tribal chief , also symbolise the two types of devotees among those who strive for Moksha or Liberation through union or oneness with the Supreme. 5-One type consists of those who rigidly and sincerely observe the injunctions and follow the teachings of the Vedic scriptures and are thus the followers of Vaidika Karmas. That type is represented by Deivayanai, whom Subrahmanya married in the regular orthodox way .6-The other type consists of the ardent Bhaktas who attach more importance to right mental feeling and emotion than to rules and regulations. This type is symbolised by Valli, who grows as the foster-daughter of the hunter king, Nambi. Subrahmanya marries her in the combined Gandharva and Paisacha modes of marriage. He manifests love in wooing her and uses force in fighting against her relations who try to obstruct Him 7-In her previous birth Valli & her sibling Deviyanai (Devasena) were the daughters of Lord Vishnu & both of them undertook several penance to became the consorts of Lord Murugan, who appeared before them & gave them the boon of the marriage in their next birth. It tells the story of Murugan's courtship and his union with the daughter of the hunters, Valli. 2-He saw Valli in the fields and assumed the form of handsome tribal hunter. She asked him to leave as the chief was coming. After the chief left, he changed back into the hunter form and proposed to Valli but she refused. He then changed himself into an old man. He asked Valli for food & she gave him a mixture of millet flour & honey.
3-She provided him with water too to which the lord jokingly remarked that she can quench his thirst for a companion too.. 4-But that made her angry so the lord requested his brother Lord Ganesha for help. Lord Ganesha appeared as a wild elephant. On seeing the elephant, Valli ran back to the old man pleading to save her.
